Slow cold water flow from kitchen mixer tap

I've got a kitchen mixer tap (pretty old) which worked alright and then a week ago the cold water flow reduced. At times it's just a trickle but then it will increase after a while but it still remains poor. I know you can get presure imbalances in mixer taps but i am confused as to why it has worked in the past but now doesn't want to play.

One thought is that it's worse when the hot tap has been on but i think this may be spurious info. Could it be a mechanical issue?
