I'm fitting a small sink in a downstairs loo. What size screws would you use? I had some size 8 steel ones and the head disentegrated. I need something decent and long.
then you are going to have to get a longer driver.
pozidriv is easier to keep straight than slotted. As you have a metal screw and a ceramic basin, it is worth using a rubber washer (such as a tap washer) against the ceramic, and a metal washer under the head of the screw to transmit the pressure.
The holes in basins are sometimes nowhere near strong enough to hold the basin to the wall with out a pedestal supporting from underneath. If that looks like what you've got, support the basin and glue it to the wall.
Silicone is OK but takes a long time to thoroughly set. Something like "Nail and Seal" is ideal. If you can get your screws in they'll hold it while it sets
There are often 2 oval shaped holes drilled through the back of the basin coming out near to the base of the taps. You may have over looked these thinking they are too big to use.
I always use Fischer wall hung basin fittings through those holes to get a decent fixing provided it is masonary or wood you're fixing into:
Screw the bolts into the wall in the correct positons first, slot the basin into place, the tighten the plastic nuts up using a spanner. Should work a treat.
Should be able to get them at any plumbers merchants.
