So CORGI is going

I think you are all missing the point.

Yes the CORGI will no longer "look after" the register of gas operatives on the 31st March and it will go across to Captia and be operated under the "GAS SAFE" brand, but CORGI aren't going anywhere.

In all the trade publications I've seen recently there are double page ads letting tradespeople know that CORGI is saying and that is is still in people's interest to keep paying your membership fees- they list various benefits that are neither here nor there.

Only in very small writing does it state that to legally work on gas after March 31st you must be "GAS SAFE" registered.

CORGI is muddying the waters if you ask me. It is an open invite for the cowboys out there to simply join CORGI on 1st April 2009 then when the little old lady down the road asks if they are CORGI registered (as the TV told her to) Mr Cowboy can produce his CORGI card with no problems at all- the fact that it is completely worthless and they are still not legally allowed to work on her gas means nothing.

Exactly. You've hit the nail on the head.

IMO CORGI won't give a t*ss who they take money off, as that is all they have ever been around to do.

Gas safety. Those two words have never been attributable to CORGI :x

The CORGI Trust is going in the bin. CORGI Services Ltd. isn't.

They are still managing registration and renewals until 31st March.

Only if you're a bit thick.

Where does any of the literature or legislation say that a cowboy, or even an indian, can do that?

when the little old lady down the road asks if they are CORGI registered (as the TV told her to)
The TV will not be telling her to do that, unless she's playing a video recording of a bygone era.

the fact that it is completely worthless and they are still not legally allowed to work on her gas means nothing.
It means that the person is a criminal, just like it always did.

Feel I must apologise as I have just re-read the CORGI feature in Jan Gas Installer and it does state that only Gas Safe registered installers will be able to join the new CORGI scheme. At least they have that right.

The problem I can see now is that the general public are (mostly) aware that you need to be CORGI registered to work on gas, so when Capita take over and we all become Gas Safe registered the average Joe will still be looking for an installer that is CORGI registered- which will cost an additional £110 per year on top of whatever the cost will be to be Gas Safe registered.

There is going to have to be one hell of a marketing/press campaign if they want to really educate the public on the change.

I disagree. Completely.

CORGI has been around for so long that everyone knows the name, but so what?

The Queen's coronation was before I was born, but I won't have any difficulty whatsoever adjusting to a King.

...which will cost an additional £110 per year on top of whatever the cost will be to be Gas Safe registered.
WTF? If your customers are so stupid as to refuse to let you service their gas appliance, after 31st March, without having a meaningless bit of plastic, then they deserve to be abandoned to the mercies of illegal repairers.

There is going to have to be one hell of a marketing/press campaign if they want to really educate the public on the change.
CORGI CORGI CORGI CORGI CORGI CORGI CORGI.

CORGI is not mentioned in the legislative part of GSIUR or the Building Regulations

FFS. If people are so narrow-minded and/or naive as to have used the phrase "CORGI registered engineer", instead of "RGI", then more fool them. An RGI is an RGI is an RGI. Nothing will change except for a fee and a logo.

Back in the real world, most customers don't give a rats ar*e whether or not a repairer is registered - they just want their boiler to work for the least possible outlay. This is why there have always been cowboys, and is why there always will be.
