There was a report of a socket not working.

When tested it was intermittent working if switched on and off.

The socket was replaced with a like for like one.

When the failed socket was tested it was heavily sooted inside.

I've had a couple of sockets (of the same type) at work, where the spring action on the switch has worn loose.
Loose contacts mean higher resistance, heat and scorching.

Alternatively, has the socket switch been used to turn the appliance on/off, rather than its own switch?
