Socket failure - what is the cause

There was a report of a socket not working.

When tested it was intermittent working if switched on and off.

The socket was replaced with a like for like one.

When the failed socket was tested it was heavily sooted inside.

Sounds like to me like you overloaded the socket.
What was that socket powering?

Was it in a kitchen?
 
I've had a couple of sockets (of the same type) at work, where the spring action on the switch has worn loose.
Loose contacts mean higher resistance, heat and scorching.

Alternatively, has the socket switch been used to turn the appliance on/off, rather than its own switch?
