Son needs help to decide what job/career he wants to do

Generally speaking its driven by market forces.. You'll earn slightly less than the cost of getting the next bloke to do a better job. All the time there is no next bloke, your earnings will be high. As soon as there is a queue of next blokes it wont be. Unions are sometimes able to break that model which is why there are tube drivers on £60k per year

She abolished grants though.

Did she? How come I had one when I went to university during the Major government? More or less covered my rent too.

I see Roger hasn't answered a very simple question. My son's teachers are excellent - despite all being god botherers. Had an interesting debate with him last night on that too. ;)

So MPs should be earning about £zero.

How much do you think a teacher should be paid Rog? Bearing in mind the 10,11 or 12 hour days?

For primary school teachers, same as france. £22 pounds per hour.

For burnermans role who has to deal with shotgun wielding folk.. £40k tops and a £20k pension.
His role doesn't sound that academically challenged. My Dads best friend was one step below the education secretary in the civil service who was earning £60k when she retired and now receives a £30k per year pension.

I suppose if some teachers are putting in a 12 hour day then that will equate to (allowing for hol's) £40k per year. About right I'd say.

Ridiculous.

Why? Should he be paid danger money?
A builder sees more danger every day and would struggle to bring that home.

If the top dog in the civil service over education was earning £60k then why was burnerman entitled to similar?
How bizarre.

Evening all - your comments are appreciated! I'll try to answer / justify where I can.
At times, my salary seemed to be courtesy of Dick Turpin.....at some other times, no price could have justified it. Anyone here who has employed people knows what a nightmare staff can be.....in the form of absence or improper behaviour.
In the majority of cases, your work doesn't get done, you lose some money, the customer isn't happy but the wound usually can be healed. In my situation, I could have 5 staff absent on a Monday morning. The classes of kids would of course show up - they can't be put on hold! That meant cover for 6 periods per day, per class. It was my duty to them to give them at least, some relevant education. In the majority of cases, the kids would have behaved better if a supply teacher hadn't been there......!
If the teacher wasn't in on Monday you could bet your bottom dollar you wouldn't see them that week.
Fancy a crack at that?
Any of the many toe rags about would be sent to me - like it or not. They could not be refused by someone who valued his staff. OK, they may not have the classroom skills but they sure were better than me at their own subject.
Fancy a crack at that?
As for being academically challenging, that doesn't really hold water - although a treat to me was to teach O level and A level electronics. Does an air traffic controller need to be an academic or just a thoroughly responsible and well trained person?
In a school of 2200 pupils and gawd knows how many staff, there were only 4 faculty heads. A higher rank would have been a deputy head - same salary but no contact with the kids which would not have suited me. I didn't particularly choose it - rather OFSTED chose me.
At the end of the day you know, a situation decides on the importance of the individual. If your bog is blocked, the most important person in the world is the plumber or drainage specialist!
Regards
John :)

University education used to be free, and you could then get a maintenance to help with your living expenses. Unfortunately Gordon Brown decided that at least 50% of children should be able to go to university, so the money to fund university education soon got used up, resulting in having to charge students for their education, then Cameron decided to remove the maintenance grant as well, so completely messed the system up.

Of course Labour abolished the grammar schools and stopped social mobility, sent kids to university that shouldn't have gone, screwed the system up so bright kids (from whatever social background) couldn't afford to go, and generally ruined the future of this country by having fewer bright graduates to go into jobs that now get filled by people from overseas.

I think JonhDs comments of politicians being paid, or worth, Zero, is pretty accurate.

Do you think you could do their job?
I like politicians and politics like I like a rash on my nutsack, but someone has to do a shoitty job.

Bang on Doggit. Could not agree more.
The last few years so many sixth form leavers get straight A's. I went to a boys grammar school (Noseall notes this and tries to think of a relevant insult connected to this whilst wearing his £150 'designer' jeans (the ones with the press studded bum flap and 'Freddie Mercury' embroidered over the tradesmans entrance) and one kid in my year got straight A's. He really was a genius and is now a QC. Hardly anybody got straight A's at A-Level years ago.

Peter Mandelsohn has slipped off the radar in recent years but this is a great example of someone who has capitalised on a (previous) political career to make a hell of a lot of money. He socialises with Russian oligarchs and is reputed to have a UK property portfolio something along the scale of that of Alexander the Great. I once saw him speak about social inequality.....whilst he was wearing a £30,000 Patek Phillipe watch and a pair of £2000 shoes. Mind you when he came to my home town to give a speech when Labour were in power the council opened up all the gentlemens conveniences specially.

(Nosebag give up mate you ain't bright enough).
