space saver spare wheels

Happy to pass dodgy tyres on to an unsuspecting driver? What if they blow out on the m-way?
They weren't the kind of tyres you'd use on a motorway. Strictly off roading.

When I was a student, I used to buy wheels off wrecked cars from the local scrapyard. I would then take them to a tyre fitter who would swap the tyres over onto my car. I would give the tyres a good visual inspection for any signs of obvious damage and trust to luck for anything else. I remember doing the sums and would say I got 4 very reasonable second hand tyres for the price of 1 new tyre.

When the car went for its MOT, I would always remove the spare if I thought it was not road legal. The car never failed for not having a spare, but this was back in the 80's.
