Spanish to start making claims over Gibraltar in trade talks

Just because Gibraltar wants to stay British it doesn't mean we have to keep it.

It's a ****ty thing to do but my bet is that it'll end up going to Spain now. We'll trade it for something we want more.

Just because Spain signed it over in the past doesn't mean they can't ask for it now. And the EU will back Spain's view more than ours. They've got a lot of leverage.

Against gibraltarians will eh? That'll be popular.

In what way? it was ceded to Britain in 1713, it's not up for negotiation, in much the same way France isn't, it too shares a border with Spain.

France hasn't just left the EU and about to enter trade negotiations.
The UK has and is, so anything is up for negotiation

Spain has always disputed Gibraltar, so it isnt clear cut -there has for many years been a question over the airport and territorial waters

Gibraltar is only a rock but its strategically important both geographically and politically.

Johnson was quick enough to push NI under a bus, he wont give a monkeys about a rock.

My guess is that brexiteers will be far more upset over Gibraltar than NI

The Catalan region disputes Spain, so what?

Who cares about popular, Johnson's got a large majority. Who really cares about 35,000 people living in a borderline tax haven?

It's going to be a mess when, and it is when, Spain starts being awkward with the border crossing again.

They've done it whilst we were part of the EU and the rest of the EU out pressure on to get them to stop. Now, they won't care.

So? the EU doesn't listen to Spain, they're not important.
The EU has to show that it's better to stay in than leave. It'd be stupid for the rest of the EU not to take Spain's side on this.

They don't have a side, Gibraltar is British and has been since 1713. Not even worth the EU Raising as only Spain care about it, the EU doesn't care much about Spain, a largely irrelevant country.

And they don't care if Spain shuts down all land traffic into and out of Gibraltar. Again.

They will care that it acts as a tax haven just off their coast and since we're no longer in the EU to block any attempts to get it blacklisted it's going to be hit hard given long enough for the legislation to be drafted.

There's no way this is going to go well for Gibraltar.
