if its not a requirement of your MOT to have your speedometer tested/calibrated, and i dont think it is , if you were caught going 40mph in a 30mph area but found out that your speedometer was faulty and it showed 30 when you were doing 40 could you get off with the fine and points. just a thought

lots of things arent tested on the mot, but you are still required to maintain them correctly fot the construction and use regulations. so not only would you be done for speeding but also failing to maintain ithe speedometer.

but how would you or anyone else know if the speedo was out????

because youve said if you were caught for speeding, you could use the excuse of your speedo not working so they would know. Also a police officer can inspect your vehicle at any time.

no you are not following my post, say you were driving along in a 30 and saw a copper behind you so you are definately not going to go faster than 30 when he pulls you in saying you were doing 40. you fight it, get you speedo check then find its out of calibration, if its not a requirement to get it calibrated or tested on your MOT how can it be your fault

I am following what you are saying. You are at fault beacuse to keep the car on the road you must comply with the construction and use regulations one of which is to ensure that your speedo is working correctly. Dangerous parts sticking out of your vehicle are not checked on the mot, but they come under the regs and you have a responsibility to comply with them.

As for calibration that is why a margin for error is given when prosecuting speeeders.

Just been done for speeding by any chance?

no old and boring don't speed any more, only excitement i get these days is driving with my seat belt off. just thought it odd i know you said if bodywork was dangerous its your responsibility but you can see that and cant hide from the fact but a fault speedo different kettle of fish

ok so lets suppose you get stopped for doing 40 in a 30 mph area. What exactly are you going to say to the officer that stops you in your scenario?

well, after quickly putting on my seat belt, i would say no way i saw you and kept exactly to 30mph on my speedo, god i hope this doesnt happen to my or you tomorrow, and if it was a patrol car with two plods in it i may even suggest their speedo was faulty and one of them jump in with me and one follow? maybe

so one jumps in with you and hey presto sees youve got a faulty speedo (excpet he wont get in with you) and you get a summons for the speeding, speedo and no setbelt! You can claim their speedo is faulty except the speedos are reguarly calibrated, and they will more than likely have been using a proper speed measuring device to catch you speeding rather than just the speedo.

yes i know what your saying but surely it should be tested for accuracy at some point in the cars lifetime? i bet an old vintage cars speedo is out of wack and i bet these are still not required to be tested/calibrated. i know two wrongs dont make a right but it doesnt make sense to me that you dont have to have something tested/ calibrated by law but you are punished by law if it found to be faulty

Many moons ago I had exactly this situation. I had a company car - a Ford Escort MKII. It had a new speedo fitted under warranty after 8000 miles. I was on the motorway and noticed the boys in blue behind, I was sat exactly at 70 on the speedo. They moved to the outside lane and came alongside me, I of course was looking straight ahead, they stayed there for about 1/2 mile and then pulled in front lit up like a Christmas tree. I was asked what speed was I doing, being young and cocky ;) I said I'm sure you're going to tell me, 83mph was the reply. Straight away I was on my high horse saying no way, I was dead on 70 etc etc... when I'd finished the very patient copper said we beleive you, we could see you looking in you mirrors and watching us when we were along side you. I showed them the jobsheet for the new speedo and they let me go. If I'd have been that copper I'd have written a ticket, I really wasn't very nice that day.

Regards - J

exactly my argument but you cant reason with a static camera just seems odd it doesnt require a check at some point. some politician will see this and bring in a new tax you watch
