Can someone tell me if you can buy ready made spot light loft protectors?

I've been up in the loft and can see gaps have been left in the insulation
I'm not really happy and would much rather have 'something' there as a protector

An open cylindrical or square protector would do the job

The only requirements I see is that it would need to be heat resistant!

Anyone know where you can buy something like this?

Thanks

great idea!
would it have enough ventilation though?
thanks

I have used them as they come, but you could drill a few extra holes in the base if you wish using a masonary drill.

I use a plant pot too, but Screwfix do intumescent hoods - 70589.
Expensive for what they are but you do need something.
John :)

i had a look at the screwfix thing
it looks odd
i thought it would be VERY important to have full ventilation because of heat build up?

i think i'd stick with the ceramic pots - much safer + will stand heat

Then you do not realise why or how they are designed.

Do it correctly or get in an electrician.

i'm sure there's a lot of truth in that :)
do u know why they're ok?
i was just going on common sense - no air apart from what u have trapped in enclosure?
let me know
thanks

It is called insulation, a fairly easy concept to understand.

Check with building control @ your local council. A plant pot or the correct hood.

Waste your money if you wish OP! Many people will have used the clay plant pot method, but if you wish top get an electrician please do so, but I can quarantee he will erm and r, and then say 'you need me to do this for you ...', for which he will charge a fortune to install and your protection will be no better.

................. wait for it ............ !

i didn't want to hurt alarm's feelings by replying - he seems to feel fairly strongly about the subject

i don't see the point of getting an electrician or even contacting my local authority
it's seems a fairly simple and straight forward thing?
plant pot: should do the trick fine

i'm sure some genious has developed and patented the screw fix thing
but i'm still scratching my head, since it seems counter intuitive to close the gap around the light - to me anyway

You certainly wont hurt my feelings.
Do as you wish.
You have been told the correct method of doing things. Not for me to force you to do anything.

Prior to the introduction of specialised covers or lamps with built in heat deflectors, plant pots were commonly used as were boxes made from chipboard with holes drilled in the top. Some bright spark decided to design something specific and charge a fortune for it!

He doesn't need an electrician.

He does need somebody with a bit more sense than you advising him though.
