I am currently trying to get power from switch at the top of the stairs to power a separate switch and light in the cupboard, I am getting power but the light and switch only works when the stair light is on!
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Picture of the stairs switch? You need to connect the new switch to a permanent power feed. You must have connected it to a switched live.

This is the set up at the top of the stairs

Fraid you can't pick a permanent live due to the arrangement of the switch. You'll have to take it from another switch or from a light fitting.

No it won't..

What you can do: Pop in to the loft and you'll find either a junction box or a light fitting. One will contain a permanent live and a neutral. You can connect your new switch from there.

That’s the light fitting
