I need to replace a faulty brass screw down stopcock as the internals are goosed because of over tightening it is in a difficult location low down at floor level behind kitchen units it would be much easier for me if i could replace it with a pegular 1/4 turn ball valve or a sure stop type valve i know some will say put the ball valve after the brass screw down valve but if i did that i would still have to work the brass screw down valve now and again to stop it seizing up any advice would be appreciated ?

As long as you have the old stopcock is open it doesn't matter if it seizes up as your new valve will be the one to control inward flow

Sounds like you mean an iso valve? That’s the wrong valve for the wrong job.

If the other main water valve isn’t leaking and is open leave it and remove the handle , then if there is space put a new stopcock just above it. You would need to turn the water off on the street first.
Best wishes Jake
