Take the tester out and remove that circuit, re-apply the others and see if it holds.

Done that too. Im so lost with this one its not even funny. All works ok if not connected to the RCD though.

If it is a TT you need two rcd,s in most circumstances . I really think you need the circuits tested, you need to know the Zs is low enough for the unprotected side of the board.

But why would that explain it working one min then not now? what could be causing these voltages?
 
It would'nt thats another issue . You have probably an earth to neutral fault on the rcd side , if you havent interfered with any of the other circuits and linked a neutral. One circuit at a time on to the rcd will show you which one is tripping.
You really need to find out your earthing arrangements for the unprotected side though.
 
You say it trips with the "tester socket" connected, is there anything plugged into the tester socket. Such as a lamp to show whether power is on or off ?

And how are you getting internet access if the power is OFF ?.
 
I think we need a photo of this CU with the cover off to see whats going on.
 
When the "tester socket" trips is only when ANYTHING is plugged in to it. Im not currently at the house in question as its one that im working on to live in
 
Why is it that you guys always slate the methods others use? Volt sticks are used to detect the presence of voltage.... what's wrong with that? Its not like im using it to test the whole house! :)

Anyone would slate methods that may put life at risk.

Volt sticks detect the presence of potential difference ( akin to voltage ) but give no indication about how that potential difference is created.

A volt stick can show a "voltage" of 230 on a water pipe. In truth the water pipe is grounded and the person holding the volt stick is at 230v above ground. Invariable this is due to the person's body be capacitively coupled to conductors that are live. Using a volt meter between ground and the water pipe would show the true reading of zero or near zero voltage on the pipe.
 
How about - you have connected the neutral from the RCD protected circuit to the neutral bus bar of an unprotected circuit?
