Hi.

I had composite decking installed 12 months ago, with 5 x 90mm x 90mm posts positioned, 1 in each corner and another centrally to the rear. The intention was to hang sails from these, but as this has proved unsuccessful, I'm now thinking to add 2/3 horizontal 90mm x 90mm beams of the between each post, so 12 altogether. With the frame then more secure, I'm thinking of then of attaching a half cassette awning to one side, to cover the seating area from the sun.

Does this sound reasonable, or am I setting myself up for a fail, please? I was looking at a full casette but I would be concerned about the weight.

If so, do the horizontal beams need to match the 90mm x 90mm vertical posts, please?

The gaps between the rear posts are 2.43m, with the sides 3.12m, so I'm also struggling to find a local timber merchant with these sizes.

Any help/thoughts are appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

I would think the method of fixing would be as important as the materials used. Wood has a habit of rotting especiall if not selected , prepared and maintained properly. Presonally I would try to avoid it if you are thinking long term. You really need to draw it out showing sizes the directions of loadings and weights involved. If the problem you had with sails was the wind then you will probably need to ensure your cassette awning has automatic wind speed detection and retraction.
