What's the best way of finding the joist when securing the top plate of a stud wall to the ceiling? Thanks

Stud finder,or cheap version tap the ceiling
Measure in from the access hatch below and then from above.
Failing that, small masonry drill bit. It'll go through the plaster of the ceiling but not, the wooden joist. Try and repeat, until you hit something. Note, the ceiling pendant will likely be attached to a joist and then, 400mm (?) intervals away from this is a good starter.

Thanks then my timber uprights on the wall I should make at 400mm centres?
Mark up top plate and trim out the plasterboard so you can see all timbers .

A house we bought, the previous owners had built the studding on to the carpet! Amongst other pretty serious bodges we continue to discover years later.
