I have a one gang light switch in the lounge and i am not sure which way i wire it up.

I have a 2 way one gang switch and it has a L1, L2 and com terminal. I have a red and a black wire to go in these terminals.

Where do they go ?

I have done it red to L1 and black to com and it works. but the light switch is in the off position and the lights are on.

I know this is simple stuff, but can anyone help me.

Either way around works for a one-way switch. Move the red to L2 and it'll work the right way up. You should put red tape or sleeving on the black.

the light switch is in the off position and the lights are on.

turn the switch upside down

Don't do this, can cause future confusion. Also there may be a maker's name on the front.

As the wires have been conected to com and L1, it should be off in the off position, so the switch has been fitted upside down, maybe I should of said turn it the right way up :!:

Point taken, but some switches use L2 and Com for one way operation.
