This is a builders forum and so reflects life on-site.
Whilst I can accept that for many this forum is an extension of the work place should we not be mindfull of the fact that it is more akin to a site where the public are walking by and bosses are ever present?
Most of my work takes place in peoples' homes, I temper my language to reflect the fact that the client/their kids might walk in at any moment.
I do swear and have no issue with most profanities. All too often though they are debased through excessive use.
I spoke to an on duty policeman the other day, we both used the f word. I would however be unlikely to swear
at a policeman. There is a difference between just swearing and swearing at someone- the latter is either a sign of ill education or an act of aggression.
I don't however think that swearing at a policeman, in and of itself should constitute a crime
in all cases. For example if I am pushed by a policeman (without reasonable cause) I should have the right to retort "don't act like such as effing bully", this is quite different to saying "you are an effing bully".
That said the police/nobody should not have to endure aggressive swearing and to suggest that the fact that they hear it day in day out should not be grounds for it being acceptable.
On an aside- I listen to radio 4 at work, why is it acceptable for radio stations aimed at the educated to permit swearing?
