That foam washer gasket

As per the title,
Yeah you know the one that comes with the trap assembly for shower trays.

Firstly does anybody know how to successfully use it?
Every time i tried to assemble the trap, the foam gasket just spews out the sides

Second does it even do anything as it seems to get pretty well chewed up when scrwwing down the waste trap.

Always found it easier to just use a thin bead of silicon

Can’t say I’ve seen foam ones, rubber ones, yes.

I always bin them and just use a decent clear silicone
