The real problem with the EU is whose in control.

The bearing it has on the big picture of membership of the EU is that the EU already sets some regulations regarding the taxes which member countries must apply. Those regulations will only become more strict over time.

It's the process of harmonisation to stop fraud, smuggling, tax avoidance, tax evasion, etc.
If that's your concern, I can understand your motivation.
From my perspective regulations to ensure people/organisations pay their taxes, or not able to avoid or evade tax, or reclaim tax that had never been paid, is not a bad thing.

Please explain how having the tax regulations and rates the same in every country across the EU is supposed to prevent tax fraud. Do you think that there aren't some people who trade entirely within the U.K. (or some other country) who don't attempt to evade tax in some way?

Let me check.

Are you pretending you didn't understand this?

So now a common tax system is supposed to stop smuggling?
Yes, harmonising makes smuggling pointless, as I am sure you are aware.

Nobody smuggles petrol from Surrey to Hampshire, or from England to Scotland (though they might do if Scotland becomes independent).

What is smuggling?

Is it not just a name to tarnish a reasonable activity in order to justify yet another tax.

Good point,,, you only have to look at Greece to see how tax avoidance has caused them so many problems.

Your repetitive invalid assertions, and refusal to recognise that, does little to demonstrate your ability to understand the situation.
There is a massive difference between system and rates!
  • Austria 20% 12% or 10%
    Belgium 21% 12% or 6%
    Bulgaria 20% 9%
    Cyrpus 19% 9% or 5%
    Czech 21% 15% or 10%

And that's just the top five alphabetically.
In the whole table you can barely count on one hand the similarities.
So, please stop making these stupid, incorrect, invalid statements. It does you no credit.

Similarities: The basic process by which the VAT is paid and reclaimed, the fact that the EU stipulates which items shall be exempt, that it stipulates a minimum standard rate of 15% and a minimum reduced rate of 5%, notwithstanding the current opt-out enjoyed by the U.K. & Ireland for the latter.

But forget rates then: How does having a common VAT system prevent people from attempting fraud?

Has somebody claimed that it does?

Or are you just making it up?

On a related topic, why do anti-EU campaigners make up lies? Is it because they think their buddies are so stupid that they will believe them without question?

For example. Boris claimed that
"Children under eight cannot blow up balloons."
lie

"Crossrail tunnels had to be 50% bigger in order to accommodate German trains"
lie

Fire and Ice claimed that the EU was
"nurturing Soviet values"
lie

Don't forget jock's assertion that immigration is not the only concern of the Brexit-ers.
It's sad and worrying that the summation of the Brexit argument is dislike of immigrants.
It's more than that, and you know it. This is just one facet of the whole argument.
Judging by the latest round of posts from the Brexit-ers it's difficult to see what other 'facets' they have.

I wonder if Jock will be pleased to see the UK, one of Europe's major powers, lose its voice in the EU by flouncing out.
