I found that my son's Corsa limited edition had a rattling noise which I've narrowed down to the drivers side tie rod end which had a really loose ball joint. The length of the tie rod end is 112mm so I'm thinking if I get a new one of the same length I should need to get the tracking done?

Too much guess work and luck needed to get it right - if you get it wrong the car might not drive right and scrub tyres out. Replace the joint but get the wheel alignment checked and adjusted afterwards.

With outer joints, what I’ve seen done in the past is people just backing off the lock nut, unscrewing the joint and screwing a new one on, up to the lock nut and then tightening it. It’ll be close, but never close enough to be spot on.

Off topic and living in the past as usual, but suspension component terminology seem to have changed somewhat.....
On the early Mini, the tie rods (or bars) went from the front hub forward to the front subframe, the track rods connected the rack to the track rod end and therefore the hub.
I'll stick with the original part names - not that it matters!
Regards
John :)

I've been having the same conversation with my elderly father who used to be a panel beater. He calls them the old names but I go and speak to him about stuff but I'm using the name from a YouTube vid or parts supplier which are different.

Oldies Goldies as they say!
I think the original Tie bar system has long gone, replaced by an anti roll bar behind the hubs. That's now called a 'sway bar' I believe.
Anyhoo, I hope your suspension rattles have now gone.......the drop links (or stabilisers) are always a good suspect, and there are some crap quality replacements out there.
Regards
John :)

It looks like the rattle has gone now changing both parts thankfully. Tracking these noises can be quite difficult sometimes.

The important distance is from the centre of the balljoint ball, to the mating face against the locknut on the track rod. That's really hard to measure accurately without destroying the joint. As Mottie says, it'll get you "somewhere near" but if it gets it exactly right, it will only be by luck.

I think a lot of the new terms are Americanisms? I still call the rod between the end of the steering rack bar and the front upright, a "track rod" and I still call an anti-roll bar an anti-roll bar! The rods running either forwards or backwards from a subframe to a bottom arm, so as to form a triangle, I have heard called "stabiliser bars" before now?
