Afternoon folks,
I have the usual neglected timber soffits, fascias and barge boards on my house needing some serious cheering up. Can’t afford replacement so looking for any advice I can get on paint choice . I had a look around the forum already but not found anything within the last decade specific to this.
Plan A includes some rot hardener and filler in a few places (they are 95% still solid, though), so it needs to be an opaque (dark brown) coating and not a stain. Preferably satin, but gloss might be inevitable…
I believe they have been treated with stain in the past (no peeling paint anywhere), but I am not certain, it looks pretty opaque to my eye, so it might be well weathered oil based paint I suppose.
I’ve spent a good couple of hours looking for a suitable paint but ending up less confident the more I read, so before I start rolling dice I figured I’d fish for good old fashioned experience…
Thanks in advance!

- Any tricks or tips for testing what surface I have, and does this help narrow down my choices?
- For example, water does not bead up on the surface – it seems easily wetted, does this mean Bedec Barn Paint (“not suitable for water repellent previous coating”) has a good chance of working?
- If I get a blowtorch on it (and not burn down the house), does knowing whether it’s oil based or not help narrow down the choice?
- Oil based generally seems like a PITA compared to modern water/acrylic based if I can confirm it will work – does anyone still recommend oil based under special circumstances?
- Multiple layer paint systems like Dulux Weathershield etc. seem great for new wood but overkill in this case? – just trying to stop the rot, cheer it up and buy some time…Am I right to bin off these paints? I’m also doing this on a ladder and I insist on tying it back to the house, so it’ll be a fairly slow process if I have to do laps!
Thanks in advance!
