I take it these are used when you're happy when the lag is just set by a master and you need no 2 way switching?
If so how are they wired, is there just a 2 core (+E?) switched live from the master to the slave which, when made, just activates the master just as switching it does?

The pneumatic ones, you set the delay on each one.

The one pushed will denote the time the lights are on.

Normally wired across a pair, Live and switchline.

Not heard of a slave one. Normally if more than one lag switch is needed, they are wired across the live and switched live in parallel to each other, such that any switch can bridge L and SL. Handy on stairwells etc, where, as the person passes each switch they push the switch to hold the lights on.
