Its the very sad state we're in, no wonder we are making such a mess of the planet - in so many cases binning it off for land fill and buying a new one is the easiest and cheapest option
I like to repair things.
You don't have to bin it and let it end up in landfill.
Take it to any electrical retailer and they will take it off your hands for recycling.
This is where a big part of the problem lies. People do not take things for recycling, they just toss small things into their general rubbish bin and think the council will re-cycle it on their behalf.
Wake up people! They don't sort most household waste!
In additional to throwing nukes around.

fixing something is considerably better than recycling
sadly manufacturers purposefully make things difficult to repair either by not selling spares or the use of undo-able screws and fixings. They want you to buy a new one.
I have had numerous toasters that will not accept a regular Warburton slice in any orientation
I feel your pain.
The heating elements are pretty delicate, sticking a knife in to remove stuck lumps, or even shaking the toaster to do the same thing can damage them. Get a new toaster with the best warranty you can get.

I don't latch on at the best of times, even less so when I'm depressed...Does the thing latch on when the handle is depressed?

I have always had success with this type of toaster from Asda. The colours and designs have altered a bit over the years. They seem to be wide enough and deep enough for most slices. Warburton's are too tall, but if you toast them a bit vertically, they shrink just enough that they then go in horizontally and you can toast the whole slice in one go.
And for 22 squids, you can't really go wrong.

That's because one element backs onto the outside of the case, the other has another element - so that one gets hotter. It would be easy for manufacturers to solve, just make the outer element, a more powerful one.
The original toasters, relied upon a bi-metal heated strip, to time the toaster. Which worked OK for the first slice, but if you reused it too soon, it would trip too early. More modern ones, use an electronic timer, which are a bit more repeatable. Why can they not devise a system which actually 'looks' at the toast surface, to decide when it's done?
We have one similar, but the pressed tin arm, to lower the toast down, came adrift and stopped latching. I fixed it by mig welding the arm to the sliding latch.

As for binning the toasters, our council (in fact all the tips in Greater Manchester) have a skip just for small electrical items. You can also drop off large ones, too.
There are also bins for batteries and lamps, so everything electrical can be recycled.
