Is the cable low voltage or extra low voltage?
Is the cable live?
Do you have access to the ends?
Is the cable screened or encased in earthed metal?

The Bosch DMF 10 Zoom works pretty well. I'm sure the D-Tect 100 scanner is splendid too, but that's a tad pricey...

got the ends, as they were headed into sockets which have now been removed, it is standard 13a ring main for kitchen sockets. Just needed to work out which way round my kitchen one of the sockets was wired (ie the short way or the long way!) as its on the other side of the room from the other sockets.
