Transformer connection - doorbell

Have a 743 Friedland transformer that I need to connect to the mains to power.

It wanted to know if it is possible to permanently wire it to a plug socket via a fused connection unit, or if it has to be connected to the lighting circuit, how would it wire into the ceiling rose? It only has two connections for live and neutral and does not need an earth at the transformer end.

It can be wired to a 13 amp plug and plugged into a convenient socket.

Fit a THREE amp ( or less if you can find one ) fuse in the plug.

As it is being fed from a fused plug you could use two core 5 amp flex as used for table lamps

Ensure the flex is securely clipped to what ever the transformer is mounted on so it cannot ( accidently ) be pulled out of the transformer.

It says on the instructions of the transformer to be permanently wired, so must it be wired to the lighting ciruit, or can it still be wired to a plug?

I can see no reason why it cannot be connected using a plug with a 3 amp fuse fitted.

If connected direct to the lighting circuit the fuse is 6 amps.

The only reason for not using a plug is that it might be unplugged or switched off by accident. Though being able to turn off the door bell can be an advantage.

Yes, you can wire via a fused connection unit from a socket circuit.

If you intend to spur off the socket circuit, you must first determine if it is a ring circuit. If a ring circuit, you must then ensure that the socket you want to spur from is directly on the ring, and not already spur. If it's a socket on the ring that's already got a spur from it, you can't use that.

You would typically use 2.5 mm2 twin and earth cable to feed the connection unit. 0.75 mm2 flex from here to the transformer would be fine.

3 amp fuse in the fused connection unit.

The fused connection unit could be switched or unswitched.

Why would you need a doorbell to be on a lighting circuit?

Do the instructions really say, or even hint, that?

As it doorbell is mains only and has to go through a transformer which connects to a lighting circuit or another means if possible.

Where do you keep getting this preference, or strong recommendation, for a lighting circuit from?

Op, generally a bell transformer is usually wired into a lighting circuit in the consumer unit.
