Do you guys typically butt your stair treads to the riser or run them under the riser?

From this and your previous posts I think you are a bit too far out of your depth to be building your own stairs yet.
There are plenty of books on the subject which I would suggest you read, if you dont know the answers to these simple questions who knows what other potentially dangerous mistakes you will make through ignorance.

Butt the treads to the risers and screw the riser to the tread from the reverse side

Thanks anobium and noseall for your polite and considered replies - time was when treads had tongues and risers had groves.

chippie, stop playing with the play-dough and watch my lips. this site is diynot, get it ? DIY implies an open forum for all kinds of experience and all kinds of questions. By and large there are no stupid questions in life but there sure are a lot of stupid people.

I think Chippie was simply pointing out "potentially dangerous mistakes you will make through ignorance." You asked for advice, there is no reason the advice should please you, a wise man listens to all advice, a fool to none.

It is fair to say that for most diy'ers constructing a staircase is out of reach.

However, with the right tools, guidance, enthusiasm, and skill there is the odd diyer that could pull it off.

That said, if a diyer starts asking basic questions about complicated projects (staircases are complex and need to adhere to b'regs) then it is time to get worried.

I thought the question was innocuous enough.

tim00, I have built more sets of treads, staircases and ladders than I can remember, straight, curved, circular, on wheels, for houses, warehouses, TV, theatre, film and opera so if you don't know something basic and you ask for advice don't get ****y when it is given.

In my original reply I wasn't trying to put tim00 down but it was the 3rd post of his I had read where he was demonstrating a lack of basic knowledge and I was worried.
I could have made my post gentler but I am a 1 finger typer and it takes me ages to post anything so I tend to be blunt.
For what it is worth I generally run the tread over and under the riser on a closed tread but there was very little info given on the type of construction.
Sorry for any offence given.

I apologise too, sorry that i rushed to judgement and reaction. Thanks for being a man and stepping up in the right way.
