    Odd that you consider public service NOT a form of rehabilitation when it absolutely is. If you'd like to see more skills training, that's always been a joke in this country, even for students prepared to pay. The US state prison system is private and profit-driven, prisoners are used as a form of slave labour. Is this worse than being celled up to 23 hours a day as happens here ?

    Guantanamo bay is where they torture and interrogate terrorists. Would you rather these terrorists were allowed to intermingle with prisoners in larger populations where they are able to radicalise them? Are you aware that prisoners being radicalised in prison is quite common and a very serious problem? I suppose in your view the terrorist has a human right to practice their religion....

    another hard left nut job...

    Where did I say that?

    My point that you have conveniently ignored is that a pragmatic view on dealing with criminal justice means the focus should be on rehabilitation not punishment. And rehabilitation and problems in jails can only be solved by increasing spending money on the prison system. Privatisation of jails wknt do that.

    What is your opinion of countries that imprison people without a fair trial. Like for example the case of Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe held in Iran?

    :mrgreen::mrgreen::mrgreen:

    I though I was just attempting to put a pragmatic view, but apparently I am a hard left nut job. :ROFLMAO:

    Personally I think Guantanamo bay is an example of terrible human rights abuse.

    It shows how a 1st world superpower that claims to rid the world of terror, is causing its own brand of terror.

    And why does America have the largest incarceration rate in the world at 700 or /100,000 people. Does it have the lowest crime...Nah

    Way I see it some of these fruit cakes should not be imprisoned they should be compeled to carry out voluntary work for the betterment of society

    They could carry out mine clearance in war zones just give em a set of snow shoes and ask them to go for a walk :LOL:

    Or take part in pain research for the NHS

    Ahh.....the slippery slope argument :)

    I understand that when a crime has been committed, prison is a punishment.

    But the pragmatic view is that effort put into rehabilitation, if it can reduce reoffending, that is worth it.

    An under funded prison system, with offenders locked up 23hrs a day and rife with drugs is no solution.

    Then on release offenders often become no fixed abode and cant get a job. What route are they gonna take?

    Would like to see how far your pragmatism and sympathy extends when a car thief kills your family or robs your mother and rapes her,,,,you going to visit, pat him on the head and have him live with you?
