It's political aspect. Putin can say he has met his objectives. He can then choose to hold or expand further. Actually he has captured more than his stated objectives for better access to Crimea which is largely what it is all about in some ways anyway. Then comes what was agreed in the Minsk agreement that Ukraine wont accept. As they put it once - had to agree because we had a gun to our heads.
Escalations - have to wait and see as now the attacks will be on Russia as far as they are concerned. That wont end fighting,
Seems some people they are calling up or joining their army are not what he wants. He recently said those with combat experience first. That came out yesterday. One large scale antiwar demo has been shown - it has ethnic aspects and the people concerned think there are too many of them being called up.

It’s a very worrying escalation, as Ukraine seems to be gaining ground. Russia will now claim Ukrainian troops are the invaders.

Not exactly. The stuff has to be paid for at some point. The EU talked about loans rather than gifts. Germany said no as they couldn't afford to pay it back.
The question is really are the USA using lend lease or gifts with the latest $1b.
