The anglicised version of Київ is Kyiv, and it's not hard to say.
I was told off for getting it wrong a few years ago by someone there I was buying something from - a short conversation struck up.
I've used Kyiv ever since, every single time (That's all both times ).

Very few British people can read a Cyrillic alphabet. I used to be able to but am so slow now that it is impractical, except for familiar words and acronyms

I'd hazard a guess that Vinty can't.

Instead we rely on generally accepted interpretive rules

One of them is that for placenames, in most cases, we are guided by the name and pronunciation used by the people who live in a place. That's why we don't say Constantinople or Bombay any more.

I would expect a Ukranian to have difficulty with "Leicester" "Beaulieu" or "Theydon Bois"
Or "plough" "enough" "trough" "through" and "although"

But English does not have phonetic spelling.
