Using paste the wall paper

We have an extension, plastered, to our living room. The old part of the room was papered over previous emulsion, two shades of green. The old heavy duty vinyl covered all the marks & variations.

As the carpet is the greatest expense that has been laid. We have used paste the wall paper before & it was a dream, good thickness, no mess, no problems at all.

Chose PtW this time as it is so much cleaner & easier. BUT.. this time it is so thin any imperfections in the wall show through. I have read a technical guide on the A S Creations site who made it, that more or less infers that the substrate has to be perfect. They state that a white pigment primer should be used. OK. But there is paste residue on the old walls & this stuff also gives off fumes. Also so the advice goes, do not use emulsion.

Are we now faced with washing off all the paste residue & then using this smelly primer? It took me hundreds of hours of searching to find a suitable paper, I really can't start again + it cost over £300 big room, 14 rolls! Many thanks.

Sounds like crappy paper regardless of price.
A thin paper will highlight defects regardless of PTW or normal. Sorry but unless your walls are perfect a textured or at least heavyweight paper is the way to go. I don't know how much is done or needs to be stripped off if not much perhaps using heavy lining paper first will help (you can get PTW lining paper) I had a quick look a their site and they do seem very picky about preparation!
