The white front cover of the boiler firms the safety room seal and should only be removed & refitted by a Gas Safe Registered engineer. As to why you'd replace the VR470 with something that will make the boiler less efficient, well I guess that's something only you can answer

I replaced the VR470 because I wanted smart control of my heating from my phone and wider automation platform tieing into my Z-Wave and Zigbee stuff.

That I agree with, the 470 is much more efficient control..

I should also add the outdoor unit stopped working after a few years, thus the Kw output of the boiler stopped getting modulated.
