Was Thatcher reallly that bad ?

Never said it was, it was in response to comments saying you can live on the rock and roll, well as a single person (esp bearing in mind that your council tax may only be partially paid) I have to say the answer is categorically, you can't..... no way.

So your posting from beyond the grave then?

Greed has been prevalent in man since the year dot.
Correct, but she turned it into an art!

I didn’t invent the term “me me me” and unless you have been living under a rock for the past 25 years it has always been associated to her reign - with good reason. If that makes me small minded then I’m in a very large club. I think you typify the group whom benefited under her regime. Fair enough! As I said, my friend did too. But you should consider the hard-working and willing who suffered as a result of her policies; of which there are many...

No, as I am not on benefits.

So Eddie- seeing how you didn't answer my last question-- and you are not on benefits- I will repeat it
How do you know a single person cannot live on what he gets ?. How do you know ?. Can't be clearer than that bud .

Pubs are full of single people on benefits .
Pubs are also void of working people these days .

They suffered as a result of their own policies. Unionised workers demanding more and more pay for less and less production.
I've no sympathy on them.

Thatcher's achievements will long outlive the spite of Sheffield's sons and daughters!

264 pits closed between 1957 and 1963. 346,000 miners left the industry between 1963 and 1968. In 1967 alone there were 12,900 forced redundancies. Under Harold Wilson one pit closed every week.
Jobs were lost in numbers that dwarfed anything under Thatcher

By 1984 it cost £44 to mine a metric ton of British coal. America, Australia, and South Africa were selling it on the world market for £32 a metric ton.

Who wouldn't have shut the uk mines down? It was a no brainer.
Falling production, falling employment, falling sales, and increasing subsidy; that was the coal industry Margaret Thatcher inherited.
So she put the boot in and good bloody job.

But she didn't do it out of spite. Only the small minded people think that.
Thatcher just switched off the increasingly costly life support which had kept these zombie industries going.

When Margaret Thatcher dies the streets of Sheffield will flow with ale. But the next day the revelers will wake up with headaches and Margaret Thatcher will still have crushed Arthur Scargill, will still have helped win the Cold War, and will still have shown the supposed inevitability of socialism to be the dimwitted sham it was. And those achievements will last longer than the hangovers.

Maggie got those lazy 'miners' sorted .
I have a pal who was a miner in those parts-- and he openly admitted- most nights he never saw a bit of coal and went home cleaner than when he entered the pits (to his sleeping quarters) at night shift .
Bit like British Leyland -- no wonder they shut down . Real load of lazy barstewards who worked (????) there .
(Night shift used to 'bunk down for the night 15 mins after they clocked in)

No wonder they were all good golfers -- pleanty of time to paly each and every day.
Good old Maggie- she was a star.
Dont make a politician like that anymore .
Bless her heart .

Again Norco, you missed my point.

Look back at what I have said; I eluded to two examples of what may or may not have gotten up your, or anyone else’s, nose. You don’t have a gripe with Thatcher, that's obvious, and again I say good for you.

I’m not condoning what the miners were like and god knows I can certainly relate to the Austin/Longbridge lazy greedy barstewards. Living nearby, as I do, I knew many of them and what some of them were like!!! (Nuff said). But there were also many who were hard working and not corrupt, lest you think otherwise.

I guess you believe it’s okay to crack a nut with a sledgehammer then? I may agree with that actually. Sometimes, ‘collateral damage’ and the loss of innocents is an inevitable consequence of winning the war sadly.

I have simply tried to tell you it from my side, as a man who did suffer under her disgusting policy on child support during the 80’s/90’s, and on behalf of those who can't tell you here because they are dead! Had you been in my position, you too would have a very different POV on this specific matter; whether you believe that or not.

I wasn’t a miner or making crap cars on twice as much money as they were getting paid.

I was 'just' a decent hard working and conscientious father working for a small company.

Proof you don’t listen/read:

Well its like this. I couldn't afford it. You on the other hand could afford it so you paid up. Thats the difference you see.

I couldn’t “afford it” either Norco, which is precisely why I said..

I couldn't keep my old banger on the road to pick my daughter up at the weekeds and I couldn't even treat her as I used to. And so, for the first time in my life, I elected to become unemployed so you taxpayers could pick up the tab. It was either that or commit suicide like others had done...

Look! I've made my point and I don't care to try and convince you of anything. Someone may Google CSA some time or happen on this forum one day and relate to it in a way you obviously never will. End of...

Tony

But you paid the money. That means you could afford it.
Just because you had to get rid of your ole banger doesn't mean you couldn't afford it.
I got rid of mine 10 years ago and never miss it. No big deal.
A cars a luxury anyway imo.

All you had to do was go on the dole and get your employer to pay you cash. Do the "double" in other words.
Everyone was doing that back in the eighties.
Or give you a pay cut and pay the rest in cash under the table. Use your head man. If he wasn't prepared to do that then I'd have told him to go and stuff his job.
You've only got your self to blame. Its a shame you'll never see that and recite the old "ooh its all thatchers fault" mantra.

I've £28k sitting with my employer. I might see it and I might not but one thing is certain!
The government will never get a penny from it in income tax or any other tax for that matter. His books are showing a £33k loss for the last tax year. This year will be a lot worse. The survival of his business this year will depend on one thing. The weather!
Thats something you can't change. Diddling the government from tax revenues is a trivial matter. Just ask JohnD, he's an expert at it.
Not something to top your self over.

I've got to admit that there are some right wing views on this subject I only hope you never lose your job then your house and have to claim benefit for ill health, But no what am I saying that will never happen to you. :)

it is so so easy for those with a job to be holier than thou
its not so clear cut black and white as some think
some seem to assume all on benefits are scroungers when the vast majority are hard working people or others down on there luck
yes it gauls me when people are scrounging but i don't blame others its the guilty and the politicions to blame
and here is where the tories are doing a good job instead off rallying people around to help each other they have us fighting each other to detract from the complete hammering they are giving us all ---

---thats unless your one off there friends and you get a bonus payment in the form off a tax cut

yes we are "all in it together"

To answer the original title of this thread: Was Thatcher really that bad?

Yes. "Pass us the polish pet, need to get me dancing shoes ready".

The problem with this is twofold.

1. Political parties make policies such as this due to public pressure, they have x people writing to them, campaigning about lazy fathers, it's a bad policy simply because it forgets that in any government run system, there will be honest losers, but it was an attempt t fix a problem caused by public pressure.

2. Parties change.

Does anyone think that the conservative party today is the same one that printed this....

I'm on the dole. No work.
And spent the entire decade of the eighties on the dole also.
In both instantances labour are entirely the cause of this. They always destroy the country.

The thatcher era just didn't come soon enough or last long enough imo.
Which is why this country is fooked.

If the Thatcher era came sooner, or lasted longer.....I dread to think what this country would be like!
