Watchdog program on Potterton PCB's

Gaz, re the gas valve, one small 'estate' of about 50 houses I have customers on all had the pcb then the gas valves go. I take it this is the exception rather than the norm then!

Any type of consumer program has got to give an airing to a few sad cheapskates to justify thier existence. perhaps these programs should stick to real safety issues with products otherwise get themselves a life :x

A manufacturing fault is fault wether it is safety or not . There have been a number of recalls over the years that did not involve safety the solo 3 board for one.The customer buys an appliance in good faith and expects it to last also under the sale of goods act it is expected that an appliance should last something like 6 years with no major repairs.

Exactly namsag thats my point most of the boilers im going out to fix free of charge are 7 or 8 years old in upboards with no ventilation :?

and yes Gas4you in my experience gas valves havent caused too many problems on the Suprima

why not pack it in marra

simple question how many revisions of the suprima board have there been

and don't start quoting bad installations

and if the honeywell board is so good why didn't they design and produce it in the first place

oh yeah cost

but we will make the lads that repair them look like a bunch of rip off merchants and keep the shareholders happy

jeez WAKE UP

My2p worth (gets on soap box)

wtatchdog is an entertianment programme, thats all it is, end of.

It uses "consumers" for its scource of information, they will only "use" a story if enough people mention it.

Take the current boiler problem, from what i read on here its been going on for years, watchdog has been around for DONKEYS years (a long time) but did they do anything then? no! why? because not enough people had mentioned it thats why, if not enough mention something its deemed not interesting, look at the spin off "Builders from hell" (ex watchdog presenter)
They get the entertainment value by setting up builders, yes there are bad builders, but they are not interested in the ones who find the set fault within a reasonable time, no fun in that is there? (but there was "SHOCK VALUE" in the bloke who peed in the sink, yes, its not right, butthey only showed it for its shock value.

You dont see the presenters sitting on the sides with their tongues in cheek do you? because that's what they do.

so come next time you watch watchdog, view it as entertainment, then you will see it in another light.

A rather honest advisor at Potty was very helpful to me by admitting there had been a fault with the gas valves on some earlier Suprimas.

The winding tension was too tight and this sometimes caused shorted turns which reduced the winding resistance.

The effect of this was ( surprisingly ) to increase the voltage across the coil. As more turns shorted, the effect became worse and eventually blew the PCB. Just replacing the PCB would cause the new PCB to blow again if the gas valve was not changed!

I get the impression that many staff engineers are sworn to secrecy on pain of losing their jobs about these kind of issues so these little snippets of info are very useful when they leak out.

Agile, it's not April 1st .... yet

How about a useful comment on the issues I quoted?

Surely you were aware of them or are you sworn.....

Agile, you said in a recent post that you worked for the BBC, not by any chance on the Watchdog programme are you.
Are you the mole?
