I have a 13 channel hikvision IP CCTV system model DS-7616NXI-K2 / 16P. I have only now after one year figured out how I can access the cameras remotely from within my network because before I was getting blank screens like in this image.

It required me to enter my IP address of the NVR (which I knew) but none of the cameras would show until I installed a plugin to my chrome brower called "Local Services Components". The link to the plugin is here however Chrome gives the normal security warnings says this is untrusted etc etc.

I know HikVision is Chinese and I'm using this for a commercial premises but is this risky downloading this plugin and is there no other way to view my cameras on a desktop computer (I have it on my app on my phone already).

The NVR is on your network, if you have concerns about the Chinese government nosying around you should have it on an isolated network, preferably its own network on its own internet connection.

Then where it can look is restricted from the off.

I wouldn't suggest installing those, since they are unverified plugins, especially in view of what you have told earlier-that you use it for commercial premises. The security warnings are there for a reason, and browser updates constantly break those local component plugins anyway.

If you want to view the feed on a desktop without installing some sort of flaky software, you may want to look into connecting the NVR to a cloud bridge. I use Camlocus for this; it connects to the Hikvision system but lets you view the streams through a standard secure web dashboard without any plugins required. It also keeps the NVR isolated from the open internet, which is a solution to the security concern of the hardware being 'nosy' that others mentioned.
