Water pump - RCD tripping

Although I have used an active RCD as a no volt release unit, that is not what they are designed to do. In some cases it can cause danger, I had it where a mag mount drill fell off due to loss of power, the required chain stopped it falling to the floor, but it still dropped a foot or so.

OK, other factors as well, the generator dropped to tick over as the magnet not drawing enough current, so a work lamp bulb failing caused it to drop.

But you must do the risk assessment, I don't mean writing out a form, but look at what might happen, if the pump is auto powered up. Be it soak the cat lying on plants, or something which is not quite as funny. Cycling, I was not amused when an irrigation started up as I was passing it. Should have realised that was why the road was wet, but I didn't until too late.

I note instructions do not show it fitted with an RCD plug. I have an outside light.

I want to be able to turn it on/off for the odd visitor to the back garden, so it is powered with a smart socket adaptor. So I can turn it on/off from house (voice command) or phone. Maybe something similar for the pump, it allows me to also set times, and is set to turn off at dawn, just in case I forget to turn it off.

I did look at this option, but I think the socket is borderline too far from the router to get a reliable connection and don’t want to open another can of worms

Instructions below. If the link doesn’t work, it’s a titan TTB844PMP 750w dirty water pump. I’m happy to replace the plug RCD with a passive (latching) in-line one instead, but won’t if people don’t think it’s needed.

So reading this, @ericmark states it doesn’t show it with an rcd type plug, but states it is to be supplied through one, so maybe they changed the later models but same instructions? If it’s non-latching as per @ebee then it’s functioning correctly.

Soooo, do I need to replace the active RCD plug with an in-line passive RCD? Or just change the plug to a normal one and crack on? The only real concern I have is whether I’m going to get electrocuted if there’s an issue and I stick my hand in the water butt

If you are saying that the circuit feeding your greenhouse, is already protected by either an RCBO, or a RCD -then you do not need to duplicate it, with a rcd at the pump.

It’s a correctly fitted external plug socket on the outside wall of the house, served by a consumer unit fitted about 4 years ago.

I think I’ll just fit an in-line RCD, won’t do any harm and only costs about £15.

The only disadvantage, is that if you cause a trip, either one, or both can trip.
