What are the best plasterboard wall plug fixings?

Hi, i am not great at DIY, i am only wanting to put some shelves up but they will be holiding a couple of books.

I was wondering what the best plug / fixings would be?

Nearly everything you buy only comes with plugs for brick but they never give you anything for plasterboard.

Never found one that works well - if the plasterboard is the thicker type, they're OK, but if thin and cheap no luck.

Can you find the studs in the wall? I've had more success with locating a stud and using standard wood screws.

For shelves, I find the best ones are the collapsible type.
