Small 3-bed cottage has old Baxi gas boiler (type uknown).

What would be a good similar boiler to fit?

Is there such a thing as trouble free one?

You need to know your requirements. Complete this online wizard and it should tell you the output (kW) of boiler you require.

Having just been in the market for a new boiler myself, I narrowed it down to the following makes. ATAG, Veissman, Remeha and Vaillant. I chose the ATAG and am really please with it. The four I've listed seem to be the the makes held in the highest regard.
