What cable for adding sockets please??

Normally if there are two wires connected to the fuse / MCB for your socket circuit then it will be a ring, but the only way to tell for sure is to carry out a continuity test on the legs of the ring with a multimeter. (maybe getting a bit technical)

Look behind your sockets - if they have 2 cables, and you can trace them back to the fuse box, which also has 2 wires in the same 30/32A fuse, you have a ring.

If the fuse/MCB is 20 amps, chances are its a radial.

There is a test you can do with a simple multimeter at any socket, to determine a ring, but I dont think, to be honest, that you'd understand. no offence intended.

<edit> b*****r Rob!

Yes, that's a bit technical for me, I will show my father all your replies and I'm sure he will make sense of it. Thanks for all your advice and patience. I'le keep you informed.

I myself have not done any electrical work but my father has... I just want to make sure he is doing the right things. He has added sockets all over his house with no accidents (yet).

You see, this is the bit that worries me. I see examples every day of DIY electrics that have yet to cause an accident. Luck is the biggest factor.

It is very easy to modify electrical installations and have no problems regarding 'things' working. What is difficult is doing so and complying with the requirements of the 300+ pages of the wiring regulations, which are written with the express intent of ensuring safety.

No, he'll be fine. I hate not being able to do stuff like this myself as I'm quite good at most other DIY stuff, so he knows that I would be doing my homework. :D

Thanks Dingbat but I can assure you that his house is safe. His mate is a electrician and fitted the first socket for him while my father watched. Some time later my father added more by himself and got his mate to check it all out and he said they were fine. Mine and my fathers safety is imperitive thats why I am asking on here first. Thanks for your concern tho, it has been noted.
