• Looking for a smarter way to manage your heating this winter? We’ve been testing the new Aqara Radiator Thermostat W600 to see how quiet, accurate and easy it is to use around the home. Click here read our review.

What have you been doing today?

Arrived back home, during the early hours, having decided to pack up the caravan, awning etc., at 1am because I was feeling quite ill, and thought better to be at home ill, than in a remote field. Arrived home, and took the heating system out of 'holiday mode', and back to normal operation, then set it to boost the hot water, except water in cylinder, didn't get any hotter. Waited until the scheduled time for it to heat the water, and still it didn't heat the water. Boiler working fine, handling CH perfectly, when called.

At that, I went into full diagnostic mode, pulled everything in the airing cupboard out, to better access everything - swapped the MOMO valve head, to a new replacement - nothing. Checked the thermistor cylinder temperature sensor, fine. Lots of head scratching, up and down stairs, rebooting system - nowt made it heat the water in the cylinder. I even began to think the VR65 control had become faulty. Getting desperate for a good soak in the bath, Ev suggested giving up for the day, and just put the immersion on to get a bath.

There I was, soaking in the bath, when it suddenly dawned on me, what was wrong - before the holiday, on the Friday, I'd set the water temperature for the cylinder, when the boiler heats it, to 34C. To 34C, so we could make use of the free hour of Octopus power, using the immersion heater. Once the HW temperature was reset to 65C, we got a full cylinder of hot water. I just need to restore everything back in the airing cupboard.

Doing, a bit of 'digging'. I did my family tree, many years ago, and managed to get it way back. Very interesting it was too, with quite a few strange, built-in puzzles. One of the puzzles, was why my great-grand parents had got married, in the largest, most imposing church, in the middle of the local city centre, and it's religion. I was doing a bit more research this morning, I wasn't able to work out the 'why', but I was able to determine the religion - It was an Anglican church.

Wouldn't a major, big city centre church, make such a wedding quite a big, expensive 'do'?

Done some Bulgarian split squats.

Hit some golf balls.

Popped over to some friends, to see how their building and reroofing is coming along.

Ate some corned beef sarnies.

Helping the police, with their enquiries...

An elderly man was attacked, and murdered locally, whilst we were away from home. We have a record on detected motion camera, watching our front gate, footpath, and part of the road outside - and yes, it was on, and it records - the trigger, plus a few minutes before the trigger, and a few minutes after. Better yet, it is precisely time stamped.

We've just had the police at the door, answered by Ev., who didn't know it recorded, so she answered no. I've just been on to them, via web chat, to say yes we do record, happy to review the recordings, but what am I looking for? They are getting back to me..

Packing for another trip to sanity/civilisation and see some friends in Czech Republic on Tuesday. Four nights in Karvina, then back to Prague for last three nights.

Got a 4.5 hour train journey after landing in Prague. Not only are the trains incredibly cheap, comfortable and reliable - but you can relax in the buffet car with a pint (.5 litre for the pedants) of Pilsner Urquell in a proper glass mug. Getting sozzled while rolling through the Bohemian and Moravian countryside. Also, as Phil Collins might say, no stab jacket required. (y)

Enjoy.

Just bought my next phone.

YAY!

Procrastinator in chief has finally made a decision.

About time too, because the battery in this one has had it. It will cut out unexpectedly at any charge below 70%...so basically now it is plugged in most of the time.

It's an immobile mobile.

Re the new one, I wanted something with a large screen and a decent camera that was this side of £500.

Got one with a Leica lens. £200 off, bringing it down to £450.

Xiaomi 15T Pro. The reviewers say it's a decent thing, but it has a lot of bloatware on it. So the first thing I will do is hand it to my IT-employed lad to delete all the bloatware off it.

Next on the shopping list, a decent case for it.

Just bought my first smart phone to use when travelling with a Czech sim. Motorola G35, was only £85 from Ebay, unlocked and brand new sealed in the box. They're £135 in Asda, which I suppose still isn't too bad. I bought this one as it's a good alternative to dragging the laptop with me again. Must admit though, I'm proabably missing something, but what have phones costing £500 or even £1000 for Iphone got that's worth all that money? What is my cheapie missing out on it? Even being a cheap one the battery on mine lasts ages on a charge and seems to have everything you would ever need.

That's how I feel about the current one!

A few minutes off the charging lead and it's shutting down...

I think three main points bump up the price of many phones: the label, the processor and the camera optics.

There are other lesser reasons, like a metal or glass case instead of plastic,

To be fair Motorola are fair dinkum phones.

The G35 is a decent phone for the money.

A replacement pair of new batteries have just been found, abandoned in the front garden, by EVRI, for the stairlift, so I have just installed them. I 'killed' one of the pair of batteries long ago, turning it off, and switching the charger off, then managed to almost recover it, but recently it got slower, and slower, near the top. Last week, it began stopping, part way up, so time for a new pair, though one still fine.

We have new AVRI driver, who thinks it's fine to just dump the deliveries anywhere on the property. Last week we had an expensive item dumped on the doorstep, and left there for 5 whole days, there was no notification from EVRI, that it had been delivered, or that they even had the package in their possession. The one before that, was a large one, susceptible to damage from moisture, and just left in the front garden, in the rain, despite someone being home, and lights on.

Absolutely brilliant
