What have you been doing today?

On the way back from our Sunday morning walk, we called in to the allotment. It was a Christmas get together for the plot holders with mince pies, mulled wine etc. My new Bulgarian plot neighbour (who turns out to live about 150 yards from us in one of the drives off our road) was there with some potent alcohol that he had brewed himself. He and a friend brew it from the leftovers of grapes that are used to make wine and they have a mini-distillery going in his mates garage! He was carrying a couple of bottles of it in water bottles. Reminded me a bit of schnapps. Bloody firewater it was - Mrs Mottie had to drive home in case I was stopped and breathalysed. Gave me a right headache it has, I need coffee. Lots of it. And water.

Christmas of 1984, my sister gave me some home brewed wine, I forget what. Me, being a green 18 year old, thought it was pish.
And drank two bottles, on top of a load of beer.

I woke up the next day feeling the absolute worst I had ever felt. I remember ringing a neighbour and telling them I thought I was in the verge of death!

Never again will I underestimate the strength of homebrew!

The usual rush up to Christmas. I get nagged to do all the stuff that has been needing doing for a while. Which is a huge long list as last Christmas I broke my ankle in the middle of getting the lounge ready for redec.

So this autumn, we have been getting that ready. It's nearly all ready. We have to pick up new lampshades for the table lamps then the last thing is curtains, but we won't them this year, we'll use the existing ones. Then I've put the fan back in the downstairs loo. Mrs S saying everyone will be pooping in there on Christmas day so we need a fan. Ages ago I took the old fan out to replace it and found the hole in the inside leaf did not match the outside... So I had to bash out the blockwork, rebuild it around the pipe and then plaster up and paint, then fit the new fan. Happy wife, happy life.

Knackered hubby...!

Got to go to the tip tomorrow with all the old carpet and all sorts of other junk.

Then to the charity shop with a load of books we are throwing out. Then some last minute click and collect orders to pick up and meats to pick up from 2 different butchers, beef, sausages and bacon from one and a 10 pound capon from another.

Then we have to go get veg and other stuff.

On top of this, first born son is home getting us tidying up.

I don't know about anybody else, but I'm blinking worn out!

It could be worse, I'm off to watch Avatar with my eldest, I can't stand this film series, I got about 20mins into the first one and gave up. Still as it's such a short film I'll be home by about 2pm! Then off for a bike ride at Holden with the youngest this afternoon.

Blimey, anything that long these days, I tend to be asleep by the end of it!

I'm sure you'll agree, it's good to do stuff with our kids, though, even if my eldest nags me to sort out the garage and yours wants to take you to films that you'd rather not see!

I know I'm only sniffing the backside of 60, but I feel clapped out! I'm envious of his energy at 26. The other two lads are 23 and 21 and are even more energetic...

Youth is wasted on the young!

Just came back from getting logs for the fireplace, second lot already this year.
No trouble loading and unloading as they come in 20kg nets.
Unfortunately I bloody forgot to bring a cloth to line the car with, so when I came back I spent half hour hoovering it.
That was the most tiring part of this operation.

Tried to put an automatic PIR switch on the downstairs toilet, which used to operate the utility room light. It didn't work - diagnosis still in progress. Might be due to LED lamps in use there.

Thinking along the lines of also automating the bathroom light, using the fan's PIR, to make it hands free.

Popped over the plot of Mott. Harvested some rainbow carrots (for roasting), sprouts and Rosemary for Xmas dinner.

Said goodbye to last guests at 2am this morning, earlier than usual.
Cleaned everything up whilst listening and dancing to my techno tunes on me own, sipping Mexican tequila.
Done 2 lots of dishwasher loads and one washing machine for table cloths.
Setup presents for everyone under the tree.
The boss wasn't well, so did all on my own.
In bed by 3.30am.
Kids dragged me out of bed at 10 accompanied by a nice headache.
Opened presents, started the fire and helped the mil with home made ravioli and ragu.
Off to a walk in the woods to shake off the heaviness in my legs.
Guests returning around 3pm for another round...
Got lots of presents but best ones were new swimming goggles as mine were all scratched.
Merry Christmas everyone.
