What is this (inside chimneybreast)

Hello all! Ok so for context. This is behind a wall of my 200ish year old stone cottage. I've only made a small hole as you can see from the picture and have come across this weird set up. Could anyone tell what it is. I'm hoping to reopen the fireplace but this confuses me. Been trying to figure it out for weeks! Any help appreciated

I think it is probably the remains of an old back boiler. These were often fitted behind coal or log fires, to heat a hot water cylinder above.

You need to make sure all the pipes are disconnected at both ends before cutting and removing them.

They may still be live, and even if not, may contain water from a loft tank

There is a chance there will be a gas pipe.
