What type of float/trowel?

Folks when applying a cement/lime/sand render to block wall what type of float/trowel do you recommend?

I have a few of the plastic (foam core) floats which have a slight rough surface, are these better that a steel trowel? Any advice gratefully received.

use a steel trowel to lay it on the wall and then use your float to rub up
