Whats best to fill gaps in floorboards?

I helped a friend sand and finish his old pine floorboards and we used a sikaflex brand deck caulking mastic (probably 290dc) to fill the gaps. It absorbs the expansion and contraction and can be sanded flush with the boards. It worked well and being black, it barely changed the look of the floor.
