I know it's a bit of copper pipe with an olive (!), but what is the 'gunk' on it please? It came from a leftover gas pipe.

 
Looks like someone likes to use jointing compound by the bucket full for no apparant reason.

No I didn't (I'll do everything except plastering and gaswork). What's the difference between gas ptfe and the one for water pipes then?

Gas tape is now normally used on iron pipework instead of Hemp & paste ( don`t ask) some gas fitters use it on copper fittings as well as gas paste, to be really sure. I normally trust in olives :wink:

It`s just thicker ptfe. :wink:

you still use hemp and paste on black iron unless it's potable water then you wouldn't be using black iron anyway (ignore the dingbat)

gas tape is a different animal because it's sintered and thicker

and you do not use paste and tape as one defeats the object of using the other :wink:
