pre-packaged from a shop, it's a magnum or a strawberry cornetto for me, but really you can't beat a proper soft ice-cream from a van, 99 with a flake mmmm - not that there's been any real opportunity this year what with the 4 days of almost summer that we nearly had....

That Soft 'Whirly' Ice Cream 'can' be a swine for giving people sickness and the trots! Its the Nozzle, it can harbour all sorts of nasties if not cleaned correctly.

It's fine obviously if your Ice Cream Vendor cleans the machine properly but there are some that cannot be bothered! I speak from experiencing the above gastric delights unfortunately.

Here's an extract from Harlow Environment Health's Food Hygiene Advice Note for the cleaning of the nozzle and machine.

7. Clean the nozzle used for dispensing the ice cream at regular intervals during the trading session.

8. You should use either disposable paper towels or disposable cloths for cleaning.

Prior To Each Trading Session

9. Dismantle the machinery as far as possible.

10. Clean the machine and loose parts with hot water and detergent or a suitable sanitiser.

11. Run the freezer for 30 seconds and drain.

12. Reassemble the machine and sterilise using a dairy steriliser.

13. Drain and then prime the machine with liquid mix - run through and discard the first serving.

Do you think all of those Van Vendors bother to do this? Have you EVER seen a vendor:

Know of an Ice Cream Man that comes through our patch, has a little tinkle in the hand wash basin in his van.................... and it isn't slander, before any of you say, I've seen him do it
