Where to start ? : Faulty gear box and repair

Nissan Almera : gear box is faulty and as a little side project I want to remove it from the car, fix the gear box and replace it.

I know nothing about cars.

Where is a good place to start that's going to give a clear understanding of how to do a DIY repair like this that won't require me having to piece together the information in a really muddled way? Using YouTube and the like are good. But I want a website or book that outlines the fundamentals.

If you taught yourself, how did you get started and how did you learn ? I have a genuine interest in how cars work so it's not just to save money. Many thanks.

Fixing a gearbox is not even the sort of job a regular mechanic with access to tools would contemplate They'd just replace it but if you are determined to do it yourself, you'd need a good assortment of general tools and possibly some specialist tools. You'd also need a workshop manual.

This will be a fairly elderly one.....basically the problems are defining what needs replacing and where to get the bits.
However, gearbox specialists will replace bearings, synchro hubs and oil seals as one.
A replacement gearbox may be cheaper but you’ll need a warranty and some idea of the mileage.

If you really want to learn, and I doubt it is time and or cost effective to repair then I would suggest buying a 2nd hand 1, fit that and then begin a strip down and reassemble (using new parts and tools as you identify what is needed) as you learn what and how to do it

Haynes manuals are the “go to” for diy mechanics.

If its a manual box you can do a DIY repair, I have done many but have mostly used second hand parts as new ones are expensive. If its auto I wouldn't touch it.

Removing and replacing 'might' be DIY'able, fixing the internals is a specialised task, and probably not worth the cost. The cheaper option would be to source a good used complete gearbox.

When cars were RWD, gearbox removal was a fairly straight forward task, FWD and more compact under bonnet areas, made things much, much more difficult. Often it means removal of front sub-frames now.

Haynes manuals are the “go to” for diy mechanics.

They used to be, but the modern manuals tend not to cover much, because cars have become so very much more complex. Don't expect a modern Haynes manual to even cover gearbox removal, never mind how to strip and repair the box. The manufacturer's workshop manual is needed for that depth of explanation.

Modern cars are far too complex for Haynes manuals. But I noticed they do an owners manual for the Boeing 707 1957 to present, so maybe mistaken.
