I haven't decided if I'm going to lay my floor or get the pros in, but I'm thinking about doing it..... where do you start to lay, and what happens, for example, when you get to the other side of the room and you have a gap of 30mm ? do you really cut a thin sliver of wood.... or do you measure up beforehand to avoid this... like you do when tiling?

It is just like tiling, measure beforehand to ensure you don't have too thin a strip. There is normally guidance in the laying instructions on the pack.
Where you start depends on the room layout and whether you have taken up skirtings/architraves or if you are laying to them and fitting a trim.

I start in corner furthest from the door since you need to be able to work up the the door frame.Good to check room for square as if out of square by a lot you may need to alter the first row to reduce the overall effect [if the correction is all done on the last row it will be more noticeable.]
