Which breaker to use?

I think over 50% of the UK population refer to them as hoovers.

whether they are the hoover brand or not

Quite - certainly for older generations (like me!), who were brought up in a world in which there were essentially no vacuum cleaners other than Hoovers (or ball-point pens other than Biros, or ....)!

I wonder if winston1 uses 'Henley Blocks' and, if so, who manufacturs them :-)

Kind Regards, John

Indeed, or a "Megger" and if so, who makes it?

Or if he drinks "Coke" not made by Coca Cola. Or ever listened to a "Walkman" not made by Sony.

Or uses Sellotape: if so, which company makes that?

Or a drinks container that keeps hot drinks hot and cold ones cold. Might he call that a Thermos?

A pet hate of mine, and not limited to older appliances/items. What about an iPod or iPad when referring to generic MP3 players or tablets?

Making announcements over the Tannoy!

Grrrr :)

Just to be different, my wife refers to her Dyson as "the Vax". Maybe because "vaxing" is one less syllable than "hoovering"?

My pet hate, because it's technically misleading, is people referring to fuseboxes when they mean consumer units containing mcbs.

iPhone?

Also, it never caught on over here, but AFAIK, for a while in the USA, Frigidaire was used as a generic word for fridge.

[aside]Why does 'fridge' have a 'd' in it anyway? Refrigerator doesn't... [/aside]

I seem to have provoked a bit of discussion. A pub near me was done by Trading Standards a while back because a customer (not me) asked for Coke and they served him Pepsi which was the only cola drink they sold.

This really goes to show one should get it right.

Or call plod and report that he was asking you to supply a Class A controlled substance.

PS - I actually find this:

A pub near me was done by Trading Standards a while back because a customer (not me) asked for Coke and they served him Pepsi which was the only cola drink they sold.

impossible to believe.

De minimis non curat lex, public interest, sensible use of public funds etc - can't believe they would prosecute.

Winston - can you provide a link to a news report of this?

Afraid not, it was too long ago.
