My own experiences . I've been self employed in the handyman type of role for about four years now and a portion of that involves grass cutting.
I started off with a second hand champion , Chinese built honda engine . Decent enough except for the pull cord assembly which is plastic and eventually gave up . It's currently sat in the shed awaiting a meddling with.
I replaced that one with a brand new 350 masport. Italian built , I think , with a Briggs and Stratton engine. Again seemed decent enough but while the engine is fine the quality of the rest of the machine is somewhat lacking. There was an alignment problem with the back axle , the fuel cap snagged and fell off , the belt has come off several times and the cable that controls the drive has snapped about four times in two years.
I also have a smaller non self propelled Briggs and Stratton 35 . Nice and lightweight which is very useful as one one job I have to lift the mower over a knee high hedge to get to the lawn. It's also easy to pull backwards and picks up well. I'm not sure how old it is , it was my father's
Finally I have a customer who's mower I use and it is a honda HRX , I think . Again nice machine and good for larger areas. Starts very well and is quieter too at around 94 decibels as opposed to the 96 of the others. It also has a tick over facility meaning there's no need to keep hold of a lever although I tend to use a strap on the other machines. To get the blades rotating a little yellow button is pressed in and the lever pushed forward. I've not pushed it in fully a couple of times and merrily walked away cutting nothing. It seems to drive a tad faster than the other machines too. On the downside it's a longer machine so a little harder to manoeuvre and it tends to bounce lifting the front wheels when the box starts to fill up.
