Who would lie about military service?

The Merchant Navy is the collective term for the global commercial shipping industry and the civilian mariners who work aboard its ships, which transport goods and passengers worldwide. Unlike the military's Royal Navy, it is not a single government organization but a collection of private shipping companies, with seafarers employed by individual companies. The term was coined to honor civilian mariners, and their roles are vital to the global economy.
Seems to me the German Admiralty make that distinction at the time.

The Merchant Navy during WW1 & 2 played a massive role in the war, without them, we would have had no food, fuel, weapons etc. Although not Military, they put to sea knowing they were a prime & easy target for the Germans. Their role should, & is recognised, by the UK. Anyone falsely portraying themselves as a Serving, or Military Veteran "Charity collector" by wearing a military uniform, should be reported to the police. "Stolen Valour" in the USA is a crime, & if your unlucky enough to be caught by Vet`s, you'll wish you`d been arrested instead. It`s very easy to spot the "Walt's" as we call them, ask em for their last 3, what mob, (Regiment) or if they still have a Mod 90, or just a few questions. On Facebook & other forums, you can refer them to the "Walter Mittys Hunters Club" who can "Sniff these people out".

I have put my (Vets card) on here for all to see along with my official MOD paperwork that comes along with it, it makes no difference to the two main fools on. here who ignore it and continue with their accusations which is irritating to say the least. You can buy a veterans pin on ebay now which is even more irritating and not much in the way of proof but a vets card cannot be bought or traded.

Anyone who states that they have served and are a vet is quite disturbing and in my opinion is a bit whacko. You get those who say they have but not willing to show it because it is those that actually havent got one or have never been in the forces, it is as simple as that, otherwise why not show it.

I was in the SAS for a while, couldn't cope with the woolly balaclavas, used to tickle my nose too much and cause me to sneeze, giving away our positions, the other boys would then beat me up.

just in case the half-wits come along and take the above story seriously (you know what they're like) - I have never been in the forces.

Ha ha you wont live it down now. Noseall will call you a liar and quiz you forever and a day now.

How about that degree in furniture making, I could go on and on. You are a fruitcake.
How about that degree in Egyptian history.

Oh that’s right….you made it up, and admitted it.

Your first name is Billy

Look back in the thread and ask yourself where the RN was going when the order was given to Convoy PQ17 and ask yourself about the risks they took. Service to your country doesn't entail a military iniform and you're just splitting hairs to score a point on the Net.

I'd remind like to remind everyone of the context:

Take the military family background as a whole before talking out your backside. He chose a job with worse odds than you would ever understand.

Do not denigrate his history and service asshole

He did more for his country than you or others who are flag shagging gammon false patriots have ever done.
Many people had family in the armed forces during WW2, its almost like there was conscription or something.

Suggesting a civilian seafarer has a military background is nonsense. of course nobody is suggesting that they did not do a risky or important job, like police officer, doctor, miner or farmer.
I pointed out the military family background and you pick on 1 that was merchant navy.

Go and read up about the merchant navy in the war before you denigrate his memory again.

Oh. And he wasn't conscripted. Imagine choosing to do that job. And then carrying on after being sunk.
A civilian seafarer is not a military position. You just can't accept you made a mistake can you.
You just don't understand the role of the merchant navy in the war

Go and find out more before you carry on

Given that merchant seamen could in effect be conscripted, given that they went to sea and became targets of the German armed forces, and served on ships under Royal Navy direction, given that Royal Navy could move them to any ship, give them Royal Navy training, and use their services under the white ensign, I think it's a pretty fine distinction to say that they weren't undergoing military service.

But even if you do, for some reason, want to make their technical civilian status a matter of great significance, think about the context of a war in which 36,749 merchant seamen were lost to enemy action, 5,720 were taken prisoner and 4,707 were wounded.

And in that context, motorbiking describing the Merchant Navy as this

"Merchant Navy (n) "

and characterising the organisation as this:

was disgusting.
